Powell Tate worked closely and quickly with Mattel to
mitigate federal, state and local crises following a series
of high-profile product recalls.
Mattel
As Mattel’s public affairs partner, Powell Tate worked with the famed toy company to navigate a series of recalls that threatened to damage its reputation for safety and quality. Millions of Chinese-made Mattel toys containing impermissible levels of lead or design flaws were recalled. The recalls drew widespread global media coverage and caused fear among parents. Congressional leaders made public inquiries of the company’s conduct and called for Mattel’s CEO to testify before Congress.
We worked throughout the crisis to defuse legislative action, limit reputational damage, and disseminate positive messaging during executive appearances before House and Senate committees. Powell Tate also advised Mattel and the Toy Industry Association on strategy and messaging to confront multiple state and federal legislative and regulatory actions stemming from the recalls. Powell Tate’s work on behalf of Mattel mitigated negative consequences from the recall crisis. Mattel minimized the damage and emerged from the crisis with its brand strength intact.
